At Port Perry School of Music, every student learns differently. Our Conservatory Program provides students with individualized guidance from Director, Marie-Therese Gummer to help them reach their full musical potential.
Whether your child is just beginning lessons or has been playing for several years, this program provides professional feedback, goal setting, and expert recommendations to support continued growth.
Your Conservatory Pathway
Students may schedule a Personal Conservatory Assessment at any time during the school year when they and their teacher feel they are ready.
Each assessment includes:

A private performance session with PPSM Director, member of the Canadian Adjudicators Association and Royal Conservatory Teacher, Marie-Therese Gummer

Following the assessment, students receive a written report highlighting their strengths, areas for continued development, and personalized recommendations to help guide their musical journey.
Conservatory Guidance
For students interested in pursuing the Royal Conservatory of Music curriculum, evaluations provide an opportunity to discuss whether they are ready to begin formal RCM studies.
Most students develop the necessary musical foundation after approximately two years of consistent lessons, although every student progresses at their own pace.

Does the student need to be studying the
Royal Conservatory of Music curriculum?
No. The Conservatory Program is open to all PPSM students, regardless of their age, instrument, or level of experience. It is an excellent option for students interested in pursuing Royal Conservatory examinations, as well as beginners and recreational students who would benefit from personalized feedback, goal setting, and guidance on the next steps in their musical journey!
Is this an exam?
No. It is a supportive educational evaluation designed to encourage progress and provide individualized feedback.
Will the student receive a grade?
Students of all levels receive personalized written feedback highlighting their strengths, areas for continued growth, and recommendations for future study.
For students performing at the RCM Preparatory B level or higher, a numerical mark will also be awarded using Royal Conservatory of Music assessment standards, providing an authentic conservatory-style experience while supporting their musical development.
Will Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM) examinations be recommended?
Yes, when appropriate. If a student demonstrates the necessary skills, is interested in pursuing examinations, and an RCM exam would support their musical development, we may recommend an examination and discuss the most suitable level.
For families who prefer not to pursue formal examinations, the Conservatory Program offers a meaningful alternative. These assessments provide the same constructive feedback, goal setting, and progress monitoring without the commitment of an official RCM examination.
